Herzog Hospital, with over 100 years of experience, treats the effects of advancing age and mental instability with the best medical technologies combined with professional expertise, compassion and care. With 330 beds, Herzog Hospital is the third largest hospital in Jerusalem.ย The Hospital has just broken ground for the Editha and Dr. Heinz E. Samson Medical Pavilion which will add 240 much needed beds.

Today, Herzog’s Geriatrics Division specializes in the full range of problems associated with aging:
* Acute Medical Problems
* Physical Rehabilitation
* Psychogeriatrics, with special emphasis on the diagnosis and treatment tf Parkinson’s Disease and Senile Dementias, such as Alzheimer’s Disease
* Chronic Respiratory Care
* Complex Medical And Nursing Care

Following the expertise it developed in respiratory care for geriatric patients, Herzog recently opened a Children’s Chronic Respiratory Care Unit, in response to a growing need. Children provide a very unique challenge within this highly specialized field. The Unit cares for children, ranging in age from 3 months to 18 years, who have either experienced a severe injury, a tragic accident or were born with a neurological or genetic disease.

The Division of Psychiatry has a high level of success in treating those suffering from schizophrenia and other mental illnesses, many through a community-based approach. Herzog also maintains the only unit in Israel specializing in the treatment of therapy-resistant depression

Herzog’s Research Department has earned an outstanding international reputation for its groundbreaking work in behavioral genetics, schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Diseases, addiction, ADD/ADHD (Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder), as well as pioneering work in the genetics of variants of normal human behavior. Herzog Hospital scientists have received several grants from the National Institute of Mental Health, the European Commission, the Israeli Ministry of Science, NARSAD (the US National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression), the Society of Biological Psychiatry and many other funding agencies. Researchers at Herzog are frequent contributors to prestigious international journals and collaborate with leading hospitals and universities throughout North America and Europe.

The Hospital also maintains several outpatient facilities in the community.

Herzog Hospital is an NPO/NGO which receives no government funding of any sort, yet it is one of the very few hospitals in Israel that maintains a balanced budget. It is managed by a voluntary board of directors. Donations are required for capital expenditure, improvements, expansion, research and special programs to meet growing needs. Projects are supported through “Friends of Herzog Hospital” groups overseas and in Israel and by foundations and individuals.

Extensive naming opportunities, including planned gifts and bequests, are available for a broad range of projects. In all departments, patient rooms are available for dedication. New medical equipment is also always a pressing need. Numerous research projects in genetics, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Diseases, schizophrenia and other areas require funding. The Hospital maintains a full range of endowment and deferred giving plans, including charitable remainder trusts and pooled income funds. For more information, please check the Ways to Help pages.
